Crossmark Policy
Crossmark is a service provided by Crossref that offers a standardized mechanism for communicating the current status of scholarly content. When a Crossmark button is associated with an article, readers may use it to determine whether the content is current or whether a significant update has been registered after publication.
Crossmark does not replace the article itself, the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), or the journal's formal post-publication notices. Instead, it provides an additional standardized layer through which readers, libraries, repositories, indexing services, and other scholarly systems can identify the publication status and registered updates associated with an item.
| Crossmark Provider | Crossref |
| Primary Purpose | To communicate the current status of registered scholarly content |
| Significant Updates | Registered when they materially affect interpretation, reliability, citation, crediting, or publication status |
| Minor Changes | Normally do not require a Crossmark update when scholarly meaning and metadata are unaffected |
| Version of Record | Preserved with transparent links to subsequent editorial notices |
| Metadata Maintenance | Updated when registered content undergoes an editorially significant change |
Where the Crossmark button is displayed on ALFI content, readers may select the button to obtain current information concerning the status of the publication. A Crossmark record may indicate that the content is current or identify registered updates that have occurred after the original publication.
Depending on the metadata supplied for a particular item, Crossmark may also provide additional publication information associated with the scholarly record. Readers should consult the associated editorial notice whenever Crossmark identifies a correction, retraction, Expression of Concern, withdrawal, or other significant update.
The presence of the Crossmark button indicates that the item has been associated with the Crossmark framework and that its publisher has undertaken responsibility for maintaining relevant update metadata. The button should not be interpreted as a certification of the scientific validity of the article or as a guarantee that no future correction, retraction, or other editorial action will become necessary.
ALFI distinguishes between minor changes that do not materially affect the scholarly record and editorially significant updates that may affect interpretation, crediting, reliability, or publication status. Significant updates associated with Crossmark-registered content will be reflected in the appropriate Crossref metadata.
Depending on the circumstances, registered update types may include an addendum, clarification, correction, corrigendum, erratum, Expression of Concern, new edition, new version, partial retraction, removal, retraction, or withdrawal.
Minor spelling, punctuation, formatting, typographical, or presentation changes that do not affect the meaning, interpretation, attribution, citation, metadata, scientific conclusions, or scholarly integrity of an article do not ordinarily constitute Crossmark updates.
ALFI will not use Crossmark to create the misleading impression that every technical or cosmetic adjustment constitutes a new scholarly version. Crossmark updates are reserved primarily for changes that are significant to the scholarly record.
Once an article has been formally published as the Version of Record, ALFI will not silently alter findings, data, conclusions, authorship, substantive interpretation, or other material scholarly content. Changes of this nature require an appropriate editorial notice and, where applicable, registration of the update in Crossref/Crossmark metadata.
ALFI seeks to preserve the Version of Record and maintain a transparent history of material post-publication changes. Where a correction, retraction, Expression of Concern, or other significant update is issued, the original publication will normally remain identifiable within the scholarly record and will be linked clearly to the relevant editorial notice.
Retraction does not ordinarily mean deletion. A retracted article will normally remain accessible with its retracted status clearly identified so that readers and scholarly systems can understand the history and current standing of the publication.
Each published ALFI article that receives a DOI retains its persistent bibliographic identity. When an editorially significant post-publication notice is issued, such as a correction or retraction notice, ALFI will register and maintain the appropriate relationship between the update and the affected publication in accordance with Crossref metadata practices.
Where required by the applicable Crossref workflow, a formal editorial update may be published as a separate scholarly notice with its own DOI and linked through metadata to the article it corrects, retracts, clarifies, or otherwise updates. This relationship enables Crossmark and other scholarly systems to communicate the current status of the original article.
For content registered with Crossmark, ALFI is responsible for maintaining relevant Crossmark metadata and for registering significant updates as promptly as reasonably possible after the applicable editorial action has been finalized.
Metadata associated with an update should accurately identify the type of editorial action and the publication affected. ALFI will seek consistency between the status displayed on the journal website, the article landing page, published editorial notices, DOI metadata, and Crossmark information.
Where Crossmark is implemented for ALFI content, the official Crossmark button should be displayed in applicable digital versions of the publication in accordance with Crossref requirements and technical guidance. The button must remain identifiable as the official Crossmark mechanism and must not be modified in a manner that misrepresents its function or status.
ALFI aims to make Crossmark information available consistently across supported digital formats, including article landing pages and PDF versions where technically implemented, so that readers can identify subsequent updates even when a publication has previously been downloaded.
Crossmark implementation applies to ALFI content for which Crossmark metadata has been registered. Earlier content may also be incorporated into the Crossmark framework where technically and editorially appropriate, particularly when a previously published item has subsequently received a significant correction, retraction, or other editorial update.
In addition to update status, ALFI may register supplementary Crossmark metadata concerning aspects of the publication process where relevant and supported. Such information may include publication dates, funding information, licensing, peer-review information, plagiarism-screening information, or other metadata that improves transparency and discoverability. Any supplementary metadata supplied through Crossmark should be accurate and maintained appropriately.
Crossmark communicates publication status but does not determine whether an article should be corrected, retracted, withdrawn, removed, or otherwise updated. Decisions concerning post-publication action are governed by ALFI's Publication Ethics and Corrections & Retractions Policy and are made through the journal's independent editorial procedures.
Once a significant editorial action has been determined and formally published where necessary, the relevant Crossmark and DOI metadata will be maintained in accordance with the journal's Crossref registration practices.
Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Industry (ALFI) is affiliated with Yayasan Kalidaka Cendikia Nusantara and formally published by WISE Pendidikan Indonesia. The journal and publisher are committed to maintaining accurate publication metadata, transparent version control, persistent scholarly records, and responsible communication of post-publication changes.
This Crossmark Policy should be read together with ALFI's Corrections & Retractions Policy, Publication Ethics, Similarity & Plagiarism Policy, Open Access Policy, and other applicable editorial policies. ALFI may revise this policy when necessary to reflect developments in Crossref requirements, Crossmark infrastructure, publication ethics, metadata standards, and responsible scholarly publishing.
